The algorithm doesn’t remember you

I’ve sat in enough pitch meetings to know the question that’s coming before it’s asked. Can you make this go viral? I understand the instinct. A viral moment feels like proof. It’s a number you can screenshot, a spike you can show the board, a win you can point to on a Monday. But I’ve also watched what happens six weeks later, when the spike flattens out and the brand underneath it hasn’t changed at all. The audience moved on because the algorithm told them to. Nothing was built that could hold their attention on its own.

That’s the trap. Virality is rented, not owned. You don’t build equity on a platform’s mood. You borrow a moment of its attention, and the moment it’s gone, so are most of the people who saw it.

Craft over clout is one of the principles that runs everything I build. It says I obsess over the millimeter no one notices, because that’s the millimeter every audience feels, whether they can name it or not. I’m not chasing applause. I’m chasing work that holds up under pressure and earns respect the long way. I didn’t write that principle as a slogan. I wrote it because I’ve watched too many good brands trade their identity for a trend cycle, and I’ve watched too many good creatives burn out trying to feed one.

“Virality is rented, not owned. Craft is the only thing a brand actually gets to keep.”

The math nobody wants to run

Here’s what makes this more than a founder’s opinion. Les Binet and Peter Field spent years studying what actually grows businesses, and their research, published through the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, found that brand-building work and short-term activation are not interchangeable. Brand building compounds. Activation spikes and fades. When System1 Group ran a follow-up analysis of long-term brand ads in the U.S. market, they found that 92.1 percent of the highest-performing brand-building work also delivered above-average short-term results. Activation-only campaigns rarely returned the favor. More than half of the top short-term performers scored in the lowest tier for long-term brand impact. The work built to spike doesn’t build anything else.

I see the same pattern in retail, just with a different name on it. Leonard Lodish and Carl Mela wrote in Harvard Business Review that companies weaken their own brands by leaning on short-term price promotions instead of long-term brand investment. Consumers learn the pattern fast. They wait for the discount, the private label gains ground, and the margin that used to belong to the brand disappears. Chasing a viral post works the same way chasing a discount does. You train your audience to show up for the spike, not for you.

Simon Sinek makes the sharper version of this argument in The Infinite Game. Business isn’t a contest with a finish line. There’s no round where you win and get to stop building. The companies that treat every quarter, every post, every launch as a finite contest to be won eventually run out of will, desire, or resources, because that’s an exhausting way to operate. The ones built for the long game keep showing up, because showing up was always the point.

What the chase actually costs

None of this means virality is bad. A moment of real reach can open doors. What I push back on is building a strategy around chasing it, because that’s where the damage happens. Chasing virality means optimizing for what a platform rewards this week instead of what your audience will still respect in three years. It means choosing the version of the work that performs over the version that’s actually good, and those are not always the same choice.

I’ve watched teams gut a concept until it’s algorithm bait with the brand’s logo slapped on top. It gets the view. It doesn’t get remembered, and it definitely doesn’t get trusted. Trust is slower than a trend and worth more than every trend combined.

“The work built to spike doesn’t build anything else. Craft is what compounds.”

Craft is the harder, better bet

Here’s what craft over clout actually looks like in my work. It’s the extra pass on a typeface pairing until the hierarchy reads instantly. It’s a homepage that loads clean and fast because someone cared enough to strip out what didn’t earn its place. It’s copy that gets read out loud before it ships, because I want to hear where it stumbles. None of that trends. All of it compounds. A brand built this way doesn’t need a viral moment to matter, because it already matters to the people who use it.

This is also why craft over clout can’t stand on its own as a mood board of good intentions. It only holds if the principles around it hold with it. Boring is a betrayal of the craft. Risk is the rent I pay. Conviction over convenience. Craft over clout doesn’t work alone. It works because the others are built around it to hold it up.

The contrarian thing, in an industry addicted to the next spike, is to build something that doesn’t need one.

If this is the problem you’re facing, let’s talk.
